Since turning 40, I have come up with a hashtag for each year. What’s been so interesting is that they have truly come to light and life!
Age 40 was #trendyturns40. I was extremely excited about turning 40 because I felt that it would be a turning point in my journey. It marked the beginning of knowing myself in an even deeper way and being unapologetic about it. I turned a major corner in my life at 40 when I left my job of 10 years and embarked on my journey of self-employment.

Age 41 my hashtag theme was #41andnowhereneardone. That year this hashtag was more motivation than actualization. Because of personal challenges and business challenges, I needed to be reminded that I was just getting started and I was nowhere near done.
This year has been #somethingnewat42. And boy has this been a year of something new!
I moved halfway across the country. Started (and ended) a job. Currently working on recreating my brand, which included starting this blog. Met amazing people and made new friends. And in a matter of weeks, I’ll release my first book!
The sweetest part is that I’ve been getting to know myself in a deeper way. From figuring out what I believed about certain things to learning how to cope with fear, doubt, and feeling alone at times. The personal work I’ve done this year has been challenging and rewarding.
The work I’ve done on Adeea as well as my brand has lead me to my hashtags for (prayerfully) upcoming year 43!
Shout out to my friend Rasheeda for giving me the second hashtag! I am planning for this to be my most UNAPOLOGETIC year of living to date! I’m freeing myself of old habits, thoughts, people, and expectations. I’m giving myself freedom and permission to LIVE, LOVE, and LAUGH–freely. I know many of us have been living that unapologetically–I’m just a little slow catching up.
But just like Celie said in The Color Purple…
While I was working on this post, I watched the movie Eat, Pray, Love.
The work on my thought life has been the most important work and the work that will yield me the greatest results for the rest of my life. While watching the movie, this quote resonated…
Learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on your mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control.

I promise sometimes I feel like my looks happen totally randomly and accidentally. The mixing of these two different plaid prints was a pleasant surprise! If you want to try pattern mixing, but are reluctant to try it in a whole outfit…adding a scarf is a great alternative. That way if you feel a little self-conscious, you can simply remove it without compromising your look. I suggest trying floral prints and animal print scarves to start with.

I honestly can’t wait to turn another year older. I have thoroughly ENJOYED AND LOVED being in my 40s. For those of you who are close to embarking on this next decade of life–don’t run from it.
